Nani's Soft Homemade Flour Tortillas
These homemade flour tortillas are incredibly soft, pliable, and taste so much better than anything you can buy at the store.
recipesbynani.comThere is truly nothing like the smell of fresh tortillas cooking on the stove. These are a favorite in my house, and my husband Zach is known to eat a whole stack before I even get them to the table for dinner.
My best tip is to let the dough rest for at least twenty minutes. This relaxes the gluten and makes it much easier to roll the dough out into nice, thin circles without them snapping back into a ball.
🧺 Ingredients
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/3 cup lard or vegetable oil
- 1 cup warm water
👩🍳Instructions
- 1
Whisk the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a large mixing bowl.
- 2
Add the lard or oil to the flour mixture and rub it in with your fingers until you have a crumbly texture.
- 3
Slowly pour in the warm water while stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
- 4
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
- 5
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each one into a small ball. Cover them with a damp cloth and let them rest for at least 20 minutes.
- 6
Roll each ball out on a lightly floured surface into a thin circle, about 8 inches wide.
- 7
Heat a heavy skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place a tortilla in the pan and cook for about 1 minute until bubbles form and the bottom has light brown spots.
- 8
Flip and cook the other side for about 30 seconds, then remove from the pan and repeat with the remaining dough.
💡 Tips
Keep your cooked tortillas wrapped in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft until you are ready to serve. You can store leftovers in an airtight bag in the fridge for up to three days, just warm them up in a pan for a few seconds before eating.
