Nani’s Favorite Soft Brown Bread
A wonderfully soft and slightly sweet loaf that makes the best toast you will ever eat.
recipesbynani.comThere is nothing quite like the smell of fresh bread baking in the oven to make a house feel like a home. This brown bread recipe is a staple in my kitchen because it is simple to put together and yields a loaf that stays tender for days.
My secret to success is making sure your yeast is fresh and active before you start mixing everything else. If you have time, let the dough rise in a warm spot away from any drafts for the best texture.
🧺 Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water
- 1/3 cup molasses
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 3 to 4 cups all purpose flour
👩🍳Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, combine the warm water, molasses, and yeast. Let it sit for about five minutes until the mixture looks foamy.
- 2
Stir in the melted butter and salt.
- 3
Add the whole wheat flour and two cups of the all purpose flour. Mix until the dough comes together.
- 4
Gradually add more all purpose flour as needed while kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- 5
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for one hour or until it doubles in size.
- 6
Punch the dough down and shape it into two loaves. Place them into greased loaf pans.
- 7
Let the loaves rise again for about thirty minutes while you preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 8
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the tops are golden brown and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.
💡 Tips
This bread tastes heavenly served warm with a thick spread of salted butter. If you have leftovers, store them in a plastic bag at room temperature for up to three days or slice the bread and freeze it to keep it fresh for longer.
