There is nothing quite like a big bowl of taco meat to get the whole family running to the dinner table. I keep this recipe simple and flavorful, which makes it perfect for busy weeknights when you want something satisfying but quick.

I love using this base for more than just traditional tacos. It works beautifully inside gooey quesadillas, piled onto nachos, or tucked into a burrito. My best tip is to let the meat simmer for a few extra minutes with the water so the spices really soak into the beef.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water

👩‍🍳Instructions

  1. 1

Place a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef.

  2. 2

Cook the beef while breaking it into small crumbles with a wooden spoon until it is fully browned.

  3. 3

Drain any excess grease from the pan if needed.

  4. 4

Add the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper to the beef.

  5. 5

Stir in the water and let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced and the sauce coats the meat nicely.

  6. 6

Remove from the heat and serve immediately in your favorite shells or tortillas.

💡 Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. You can also freeze this meat for a quick meal later. Try topping your tacos with fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lime to brighten up the flavors.
