Homemade Apple Turnovers
These flaky, buttery apple turnovers are filled with fresh, spiced apples for the perfect fall treat.
recipesbynani.comThere is truly nothing like the smell of fresh apples and cinnamon baking in the kitchen. These homemade turnovers are one of my favorite things to make when the weather starts to cool down because they feel so special but are actually quite simple to put together.
I love using a homemade pie crust for that extra flaky, buttery crunch, but you can always use store bought puff pastry if you are in a rush. My biggest tip is to make sure your apple slices are cut thin so they cook through perfectly inside the crust.
🧺 Ingredients
- 2 large apples, peeled and finely chopped
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 batch of your favorite pie dough or puff pastry
- 1 egg, beaten for egg wash
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar for sprinkling
👩🍳Instructions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 2
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon, butter, and lemon juice.
- 3
Cook the apple mixture for about 5 to 7 minutes until the apples soften, then remove from heat and let them cool completely.
- 4
Roll out your dough on a lightly floured surface and cut it into squares.
- 5
Place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of each square.
- 6
Fold the dough over to form a triangle and use a fork to crimp the edges tightly shut.
- 7
Place the turnovers on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with the beaten egg.
- 8
Sprinkle with coarse sugar and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy.
💡 Tips
Serve these warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a lovely dessert. You can store leftovers in an airtight container for up to two days and reheat them in the oven to get that flaky texture back.
