There is nothing quite like a homemade fritter fresh from the pan. They are crispy and golden on the outside, while the inside stays soft and full of juicy, cinnamon spiced apples that taste like a warm hug on a chilly morning.

While making these at home is a little bit of a project, the result is so much better than anything from a shop. My best tip is to keep your oil temperature steady so the dough cooks through perfectly without the outside browning too fast.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 large apples, peeled and diced
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for the glaze
  • 2 tablespoons milk for the glaze

👩‍🍳Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.

  2. 2

Add the diced apples to the dry ingredients and toss until they are well coated.

  3. 3

In a separate small bowl, whisk the milk, eggs, and vanilla extract together.

  4. 4

Pour the wet ingredients into the apple mixture and stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix the dough.

  5. 5

Heat about two inches of oil in a heavy pot to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  6. 6

Drop large spoonfuls of batter carefully into the hot oil and fry for about two to three minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.

  7. 7

Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and let them drain on a paper towel lined plate.

  8. 8

Whisk the powdered sugar and milk together to create a smooth glaze, then drizzle it over the warm fritters before serving.

💡 Tips

These are best enjoyed warm shortly after frying, but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container for a day or two. If they lose their crispness, just pop them in a warm oven or an air fryer for a few minutes to freshen them up.
