Classic Christmas Crack Toffee
This sweet and salty treat is a holiday tradition that is impossible to stop eating.
recipesbynani.comThis treat is a favorite in my house because it is so easy to make but tastes like you spent all day in the kitchen. It combines crispy saltine crackers with a rich buttery toffee and a layer of smooth chocolate on top.
You do not need any special equipment or a candy thermometer for this one. My biggest tip is to watch the butter and sugar mixture closely while it boils so it does not burn, as it turns from golden brown to burnt quite quickly.
🧺 Ingredients
- 1 sleeve of saltine crackers
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or festive sprinkles for topping
👩🍳Instructions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 2
Line a large rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and grease the foil lightly with cooking spray or butter.
- 3
Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer to cover the bottom of the pan completely.
- 4
In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar over medium heat.
- 5
Bring the mixture to a boil and let it bubble for 3 minutes without stirring, then remove it from the heat.
- 6
Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the crackers and spread it to the edges with a spatula.
- 7
Place the pan in the oven and bake for 3 to 5 minutes until the toffee is bubbling all over.
- 8
Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
- 9
Let the chocolate sit for 2 minutes to soften, then spread it into an even layer with a spatula.
- 10
Top with chopped nuts or sprinkles if you like, then let it cool completely before breaking it into pieces.
💡 Tips
Store this in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days, or keep it in the fridge if your kitchen gets warm. You can also freeze it for up to a month if you want to get a head start on your holiday baking.
